American Legion post 135

Commanders Corner

From the commander of post 135 Stephen Autrey,

I would like to start by introducing myself to those who might not have met me yet. My name is Stephen Autrey I'm a 27 year old Army veteran from Carlsbad, NM. I moved to Tahlequah in August of 2014 when the Army medically retired me. I haven't felt more proud than I was when the membership elected me commander. My want for this year is to bring in as many new and younger members that can carry on the good work that our older brothers and sisters started for us. Without someone there to keep everything going these posts will start to fade away and the current and future veterans that are in need will have no where to turn. I'm here for whatever the American Legion and my fellow veterans need. Currently we are working on a remodel of our kitchen and it is at about 90% completed. Once it is done the current plan is to starting opening to the public for dinners. A schedule of events and plans will be posted soon. Again thank you all for everything you do and we look forward to seeing you soon.
As Veterans We Never Stop Serving.

Ladies Auxiliary

The Auxiliary’s annual chili supper and pie auction was a huge success. We will be able to send four girls to Girls state with the help of donations from the Elks and four anonymous donors. Thanks to everyone that made this possible. The legions monthly birthday dinner for February and March went well. Charley provided venison for February’s and in march everyone enjoyed ham & all the fixings. Everyone in attendance had a great time! Cars started driving into the parking lot of Post 135 early for the annual Easter egg hunt. The brisk morning air didn't stop 200-300 children from jumping out of cars and trucks with their Easter baskets ready to hunt over 2000 candy filled eggs. Thanks to donations, this year four lucky children who found the “golden eggs” received a bicycle and helmet. Several children received a bag of toys and all the children received a lot of candy. Thanks to everyone who helped make this event a huge success. Ladies, the state membership chairwomen has extended the deadline for submitting recipes for the state wide cookbook. If you would like to submit recipe/recipes, please drop them off at the Legion, mail them to Ada at P.O. Box 471, Tahlequah, OK 74464, or email Let’s pull together and have Unit 135 well represented.

S.A.L.’s make donation to local community member. During the record flooding in December 2015 Rita Hix lost her home to flooding. Although we couldn’t replace the home and all the memories it held. We decided to make a monetary donation.
The S.A.L Sargent at Arms Matthew Pence is getting ready to golf in the Special Olympics 47th annual Summer Games. This years games will be held in Stillwater, OK May 11-13. Matthew won the bronze medal in 2015. He’s been getting as much tee time as possible to make a run for the gold. Good Luck Matthew!!
